Kindle Highlights Import

Upload a Kindle My Clippings.txt file to bring your highlights and notes into a BlackOps brain, one note per book, with no duplicates on a re-upload.

Physical Kindles write every highlight, note, and bookmark you make to a single file on the device, My Clippings.txt. This importer reads that file and turns it into BlackOps notes — one note per book — inside a brain you choose, so your reading highlights can feed the same AI context as everything else in that brain.

Where to find it

Admin → Brain → Import Kindle, or go directly to /admin/brain/import-kindle.

How it works

  1. Connect your Kindle to a computer (or find the file through its file manager) and copy documents/My Clippings.txt off the device.
  2. On the Import Kindle page, choose which brain the highlights should go into. A brain named "Reading Highlights" is selected by default if one exists on your site.
  3. Choose the file and click Preview to see the book and highlight counts before anything is written.
  4. Click Import.

For each book in the file, the importer either:

  • Creates a new note — titled <Book Title> — <Author>, with the highlights listed in page/location order — if no note for that book exists yet in the chosen brain, or
  • Appends to the existing note — adding only the highlights that aren't already there — if a note for that book is already in the brain (from an earlier clippings upload, or from BlackOps's own Readwise import).

Either way, the note's brain_id is set, so it's picked up by that brain's next compile.

Duplicate handling

A highlight is identified by its book, its location, and a normalized hash of its text (case and whitespace insensitive). Importing the same file twice — or a newer export that includes everything from an older one — adds nothing the second time. Bookmarks (which carry no text) are counted but never imported.

What this does not cover yet

This is the file-upload path only. Syncing directly from Amazon's Kindle Notebook (read.amazon.com/notebook) through the BlackOps browser extension, and surfacing highlights on the home dashboard or in a daily email, are tracked separately and not part of this import.
