Kindle Notebook Sync

Sync Kindle highlights straight from read.amazon.com/notebook with one click in the BlackOps browser extension — no file upload, no stored Amazon credentials.

The Kindle Highlights Import page covers a one-time My Clippings.txt upload. Notebook Sync is the direct path: the BlackOps browser extension reads your own, already signed-in Amazon Kindle Notebook (read.amazon.com/notebook) and imports highlights with one click, no file to find or upload.

Where to find it

The extension's Options page (right-click the BlackOps icon → Options, or chrome://extensions → BlackOps Center → Details → Extension options). A Kindle Notebook Sync section appears once you've set an extension token.

How it works

  1. Set a Default Highlight Brain in the section above it. If you don't set one, the sync falls back to a brain named "Reading Highlights" on your active site — the same default the file-upload importer uses.
  2. Click Sync Kindle.
  3. The extension opens read.amazon.com/notebook in a new tab, signed in as whichever Amazon account the tab already has a session for — it never asks for or stores Amazon credentials.
  4. It reads your book list, then fetches each book's highlights one at a time with a short pause between requests. Progress ("Syncing 3 of 42: ...") shows on the Options page as it goes.
  5. The tab closes automatically when the sync finishes or stops.

Each book becomes one note in your chosen brain, titled <Book Title> — <Author> — the identical format the file-upload importer and the Readwise import already write, so all three sources read as one library.

Stopping cleanly

The sync is entirely user-initiated — nothing runs in the background. If Amazon rate-limits the requests (HTTP 429), asks for a fresh sign-in, or shows a captcha, the sync stops immediately and reports why on the Options page. Every book already synced before the stop is kept; re-running Sync Kindle picks up from there.

Incremental syncs and duplicates

A highlight is identified by its book and its location (falling back to its text when Amazon's page doesn't expose a location). Re-running the sync:

  • Adds only highlights that aren't already in the brain, whether they got there from a previous notebook sync, a My Clippings.txt upload, or the Readwise import.
  • Skips a book entirely, without even re-reading its highlights, when Amazon's own "last annotated" date for that book hasn't changed since your last sync.

Truncated highlights

Amazon's publisher export limits can cut off a highlight's text with an ellipsis. A truncated highlight is still imported and flagged, but it is never allowed to overwrite a fuller copy of the same highlight from another source. If a later sync — or a My Clippings.txt upload, which never truncates — brings in the full text, that full copy replaces the truncated one.

What this does not cover yet

The extension only opens read.amazon.com — regional Kindle Notebook domains (read.amazon.co.uk, .de, and similar) aren't synced yet. If this matters to you, use the My Clippings.txt import in the meantime.
